Hey, having questions while choosing a plan is normal. We are always here to help you.

What is VPS hosting?

VPS hosting allows you to host your website or application. VPS hosting is an affordable solution for website owners who have low to medium, or even high level traffic or for developers who are looking to create and expand software.

VPS hosting is a virtual private server located in a physical server in a data center. VPS is a virtualized environment with more possibilities to set up your own server's settings and manage resources. VPS server can be operated from a command line (terminal), alternatively, you can install any commonly used control panel.

Hostens provides a full SSH access to the server with a possibility to install a selected operating system: https://www.hostens.com/knowledgebase/what-os-do-you-offer/.

What is the difference between VPS Hosting and Shared Hosting?

A web hosting is like a student dormitory: students live in one room and every one of them has a bed. However, the bathroom is shared.
A virtual server is like a separate apartment, where the sole inhabitant uses all the property exclusively, has his/her private entrance, private bathroom, etc.

VPS provides you with guaranteed necessary resources: disk space and memory. A virtual server is like a physical server, with one important difference: several virtual servers can be located on one physical server.

With a VPS, you will get root (SSH) access, which allows you to install any software necessary for the management of your website as well as any libraries and applications you need.

VPS has a dedicated IP address, which you do not have to share with other users. This is important, as in shared hosting many domains are under one IP address and if one website fails, the whole IP address is added to the blacklist. Also, in case of shared hosting, your website's load can be affected by another user on the same server. It means that if your "neighbor" website is loading or it is inaccessible for various reasons, your website loading time can be increased too.

The number of sites that you host on the server, the number of databases or mailboxes are not limited on a VPS, moreover, Hostens does not block any ports. VPS is a separate server that gives its owner the possibility to customize its settings. On shared hosting, you cannot choose any control panel or any software, as the provider has already configured it. As VPS provides full access (SSH) to VPS hosting, the customer is free to install, manage and control any software that is compatible with server virtualization.

On the other hand, shared hosting is a great way to start uploading your website. No additional server configuration is needed, as it has already been prepared for file uploading.

What is the difference between Container VPS hosting and Linux VPS?

The main difference is virtualization. Container VPS is based on OpenVZ (container) virtualization while Linux VPS servers are based on KVM virtualization (kernel-based Virtual Machines).

OpenVZ virtualization is an OS level container-based virtualization, and it has resources that are divided between users on a physical server. Each container acts like a stand-alone virtual server and can be accessed with a root (SSH) connection. As a separate server container can be rebooted separately, it also has a dedicated IP address, RAM, individual processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. On OpenVZ, the kernel cannot be modified. It has its stable version and modules cannot be added. The good thing regarding this virtualization is faster performance, and a lower need of resources.
Container VPS is recommended for small to medium web hosting and email servers, as the prices are lower, and administration is simpler.

KVM virtualization gives customers more possibilities of management and server configuration. As it is a kernel based VPS hosting, kernels can be upgraded and modified by installing kernel modules. KVM has its own virtualized hardware, and the virtual server acts as a physical server. There is a possibility to set up a container-based system, such a Docker or Kubernetes to create OS level based containers on the KVM server.

KVM virtualization is more recommend for projects with specific technical requirements, as kernel and IPv6/IPv4 network can be modified. With KVM you use better-isolated resources and unlimited inodes.

What is a Storage server?

Storage VPS is a type of VPS hosting with an OpenVZ virtualization, container-based virtual servers with a large amount of disk space. This VPS hosting is designed especially for backups and for keeping a large number of files. Also, the Storage Server is designed for archiving non-critical data. Therefore additional backups are not offered. On Storage servers, Hostens offers to install within few clicks these two control panels:

OwnCloud + CentOS 7
Filer + CentOS 6

Why Choose the VPS Server?

VPS hosting provides more benefits than Shared hosting. Choose a VPS hosting if:

1. Your website needs more resources or traffic has increased;
2. Your website requires less common or more specific extensions or modules that are not supported on a regular shared hosting;
3. You have a software project that needs other server’s specification. On VPS hosting you will be able to configure it by your needs;
4. You want to sell cloud hosting. With VPS hosting you will be able to create separate container-based users, such a Docker or Kubernetes;
5. You are using a different control panel than the shared hosting provider offers. The most popular control panel is cPanel. On VPS hosting you will be able to install any control panel, even VestaCP, and it is free of charge;
6. You need Windows servers. On shared hosting they are not supported;
7. You need isolated resources for your project.

How does VPS Hosting Work?

It works quite like shared hosting, as both of them are virtual hosting. However, shared hosting does not allow to extend or modify server settings. VPS hosting is more like a dedicated physical server on a virtual platform. You can manage and set up VPS for your requirements, as it is a separate server. Also, VPS server can be operated by a control panel that can be installed with a few clicks from the client system or the terminal command line. It means that you can even choose the same control panel as it is on shared hosting.

What are the VPS Server Management Options?

From the client area you will be able to:

- Reboot a VPS;
- Install/Reinstall an operating system at any moment;
- Change the host name;
- Access console;
- Transfer IP;
- And access many other functions.

Please note that customer’s own operating system cannot be installed.

How to connect to VPS?

After installing any of the selected operating systems with or without a control panel, we provide instructions on how to access the server via SSH to the OS, or for a selected control panel like cPanel, DirectAdmin, etc.

In general, a VPS server is managed via terminal command line. However, you can install a control panel and manage VPS hosting trough web interface the same way as in shared hosting packages.

What is the difference between a Dedicated Server and VPS?

A dedicated server is a physical server that is located in the data center. VPS server is a part of a dedicated physical server with its operating system and virtual resources like RAM, disk space and CPU.

Does the VPS Hosting server have root access?

Yes, Hostens provides a full root access (SSH) for the VPS hosting. However, managing depends on selected the virtualization (OpenVZ - Container VPS or KVM based). Please see more information regarding differences between these two virtualizations: https://www.hostens.com/knowledgebase/differences-between-kvm-and-openvz/.

Are backups included in VPS Hosting plans?

Backups are available by ordering a backup component for the price of $1/month. Please note that for Storage server there are no backups available. For more information, please visit the following link: https://www.hostens.com/knowledgebase/do-you-offer-backups/.

Which dedicated IP is provided?

All VPS hosting packages are provided with dedicated public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

How do I get started with VPS Hosting?

Just place an order, and your server will be active within 5 minutes after your payment is received.
